بذرهای یک‌ساله: افسانه‌ها و واقعیت فناوری «ترمیناتور»
این مقاله پدیدهٔ «بذرهای یک‌ساله» را بررسی می‌کند — بذرهایی که تنها در نسل اول محصول می‌دهند و برای کاشت در نسل‌های بعدی قابل استفاده نیستند. بر پایهٔ تحلیل تاریخچهٔ فناوری محدودیت استفاده از ژن (GURT)، که با نام فناوری ترمیناتور شناخته می‌شود، و همچنین بذرهای هیبرید F1 که در بازار هم‌اکنون در دسترس هستند، این مقاله تصویر واقعیِ اینکه کدام بذرها واقعاً نیازمند خرید سالانه‌اند و چرا را بازسازی می‌کند. توجه ویژه‌ای به تمایز افسانه‌ها از واقعیت‌ها اختصاص داده می‌شود: هیچ شرکت کشاورزی در جهان تاکنون بذرهای استریلِ اصلاح‌شدهٔ ژنتیکی را تجاری نکرده است، اما بذرهای هیبرید F1 که به‌طور گسترده در بازار موجودند از نظر زیستی برای ذخیرهٔ بذر مناسب نیستند. برای بخش کشاورزی اوکراین، جایی که کشاورزان هر سال با گزینه‌ای میان بهره‌وری هیبریدها و صرفه‌جویی هزینه‌ای واریته‌های سنتی روبه‌رو می‌شوند، درک این سازوکارها اهمیت عملی ویژه‌ای دارد.
